The Online GIS Survey

There are two questionnaires available - one for content providers and one for users. Please select the most most appropriate to yourself or your organisation and click on one of the choices below - this will open up an online questionnaire, which is to be submitted through this site:
Project rationale
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been widely identified in studies as powerful integrated tool for storing, manipulating, visualising, and analysing spatial data; a set of tools that had important implications in the field of natural hazards and disaster preparedness. Yet little work appears to have been published on the use of these systems, the evaluation of how well they meet users and what features they are offering in line with current technological advancements.
To date there has been no study that that aims to identify and compare content providers’ assessment and provision of user needs against actual user needs on a global multi-hazard level, which could provide a valuable piece of research in this burgeoning field. Users and content providers will be surveyed to determine what is currently available from provider’s verses what users to like to see made available.
The primary aim of the project is therefore twofold:
- (i) to identify, analyse and collate current knowledge on the use of online GIS in natural hazard preparedness, and
- (ii) to identify potential areas for consideration and development to increase their usefulness and applications
This study is being conducted by Lucy Stanbrough, and has the full support of the Geography and Environmental Sciences division at the University of Hertfordshire
